D o we really need another X-Men movie? Still less, one indulging in the unabashed comic-book nerdery of filling in a favoured character's backstory? When the first one came along in 2000, it heralded a breath of fresh air for the comic-book movie a big shiny blockbuster, commendably straight-faced after the spandex campery that had hitherto characterised the form, and one that also had something to say about unspoken social tensions that was to prove remarkably prescient.
